Day 34 – Friday 13th November
Well staying put in their new room hasn't lasted very long with The Teas. They have decided that it's much more fun to join in with whatever the rest of the cats are up to. Although they hadn't started to make their own way down the stairs yet, Phoenix was rather enjoying adult company again, and was getting unsettled by her babies being in a different room. So I brought them all downstairs in a box, and stood back to see what would happen.
The other cats have already met The Teas, so there were no surprises on that front. These babies have confidence by the bag-full and were exploring and playing in about two seconds flat. It's just so funny to see these tiny people trotting around the house as if they've always been there.
For the time being I'll put them back into the kitten room at night time but I am absolutely thrilled with how well The Teas are adjusting to their expanding world.
Day 33 – Thursday 12th November
The Teas seem to be happily settled in their new home now. They are shut in with Phoenix and sometimes Calcifer when there is no-one in, but they are allowed out onto the landing to mix with the other cats when we are home. It’s important that they get used to other animals and people, so that it’s not too much of a huge shock when they go home with their new families.
Today The Teas tried beef steak for the first time. Oolong, China and Chai love eating. Pekoe eats when it suits her (more than should technically fit into her body I’m sure) but if she is in the middle of a game she wants nothing to do with boring food. Assam will eat some, but is easily distracted too. Lotus, bless her says I’m trying to poison her. She will drink water like a grown up but says that meat is yucky, and she doesn’t need it, she prefers milk. We will have to have a little chat soon. There is a huge sweetness about Lotus, but that child is definitely a tortoiseshell, and I have a feeling she will cause her new parents a few headaches!
Day 32 – Wednesday 11th November
Today was eviction day for The Teas. They really need enough space to gallop about, and I really need to be able to sleep at night.
I had a good ten minutes or so of hilarious entertainment watching my dear friend Janette moving the babies into the kitten room. Every trip Janette was making, she passed Phoenix on the landing going in the other direction taking a baby back to the bedroom. I was actually weak with laughing by the time they had finished.
The Teas are thrilled with their new home, and Phoenix has decided that it’s fine with her now too. They have been playing, and climbing, chasing and fighting each other. It’s wonderful to watch, and it’s much easier to observe them in their little games now they are in their own room.
The great thing about The Teas being in the kitten room is that this is where the big cat scratchers are. Lotus was our first baby to try climbing. As soon as she saw the scratcher she was halfway up the rope covered leg.
While The Teas were helping me get their room ready, we had the door open, giving the babies their first real opportunity to mix with the adult cats. I’m so proud of my grown up boys for their patience and gentleness, and so very proud of the babies for their insane amounts of confidence. It doesn’t enter their heads that anything might hurt them – they just assume that the world is going to love them. It was funny watching Indiana, Sirius and Valentine working out how to play with a tiny person. Bearing in mind these boys have quite rough games sometimes, not once did one of them play too hard, or get over-excited. I was especially pleased that Valentine appears to have inherited his dad’s superb nature with his children.
Day 30 – Monday 9th November
Well today must have been party day in the bedroom while I was at work. Almost a whole shelf of books was on the floor when I got home. Interestingly, The Complete Works of Shakespeare and Jane Eyre were both lying right beside the original kitten box, where The Teas decided to hang out today. Either Phoenix is attempting to educate her babies, or they have taken the initiative, and decided that the classics were a good starting point for Taking Over The World. Which is what I believe their master-plan to be.
Whenever an act of destruction has taken place, by the time I arrive on the scene, all The Teas seem to be fast asleep in an angelic pile, and tell me they have been there ever since I left. I honestly defy anyone to actually be cross with a small kitten telling you blatant lies though. These guys have been paying attention to the Kitten Instructions for Looking Cute. There is a (probably scientifically calculated) angle of the head to be used when looking up at Human Mummy – head slightly on one side, with big eyes and a very serious expression, which is guaranteed to push any actual thoughts out of the human brain.
Day 29 – Sunday 8th November
The other cats in the house are getting very curious about the small people in the bedroom. I have let them in to have a quick look whilst I’ve been there a couple of times. The adults are rather surprised, and there is lots of sniffing and questions being asked. The Teas aren’t bothered at all about these new grownups. They just carry on with their usual business and are totally unafraid of approaching the adults. They certainly have confidence by the bucket load, and I’m really looking forward to them being old enough to race around and play as part of the household.
